The idea of having a kitchen island might interest a lot of people, but most of them wonder if they have the necessary space. Usually, a circulation space of 36 in.
Of course, this depends on each case. If you’re thinking of installing a kitchen island, you must make sure that circulation will be efficient around the access areas and that your household appliances can open. Moreover, don’t forget about the size of the people using the kitchen. It’s also preferable to secure the island on the ground so it doesn’t move if the weight is not equally distributed.
A kitchen island can bring much warmth and hospitality to your kitchen. It enables you to cook in an open space, sit down to work on your meals and even have your child do his or her homework while you cook. It’s also an additional work surface that will definitely come in handy.
During a dinner party, guests usually like to gather in the kitchen. If you have an island with stools, they’ll be able to keep you company while enjoying their appetizer or even help you without being in your way.
If you prepare a buffet dinner, you’ll appreciate the possibility of placing the different dishes on the island and have your guests serve themselves.
A kitchen island can have various functions. For example, a big island would be more practical if it had a sink. It doesn’t have to be very big; a bar sink would do the trick.
If you wish to add a heating element or stove to your kitchen island, it’s important to have enough counter space on each side and behind the appliance in order to avoid any accidents. A sauce pan handle that’s sticking out can cause severe burns.
Kitchen islands come in different shapes and sizes. You must choose one that fits your storage needs. The kitchen island therefore becomes the junction between the different areas of a big kitchen.
