Choosing your countertop
Many different materials can be used for your kitchen countertop. Here are a few ideas, with important details that will help you make the right choice.
Laminate Counter
Large variety of colours and manufacturers (Arborite, Formica, etc.). Can be built with a square or moulded front or with wooden or Corian belting. It is a very affordable counter that requires little maintenance, but be careful! You can’t chop food directly on it as it will leave marks.
Ceramic Counter
This is a favourite for those who like a country-style look. It is a little more expensive that the laminate counter, because the installation requires a workforce and the price varies according to the chosen tile. An anti-stain grout is strongly recommended to facilitate care. Heat resistant, but needs to be handled with care. You’ll need a cutting board to chop or make pastries.
Solid Wood Counter (butcher block)
This will make your kitchen look like a chef’s kitchen! Needs a lot of maintenance, is quite expensive and does not age well. However, it is easy to repair.
Stainless Steel Counter
Definitely for those who like a “restaurant” look. Expensive, but very hygienic. It is easy to clean, but you must accept and appreciate the scratches as they are part of its charm!
Granite Counter
The most popular of all counters. It has a great quality-price ratio and a good variety of colours and prices, even if it is expensive. Offers many finishes that can easily blend with your decoration. Little maintenance and very resistant; those who like making pastries and confectionery will be thrilled.
Quartz Counter
The difference between this type of counter and the granite counter is found in its colours and finishes: low gloss, satin or flat (concrete look). Little maintenance and very resistant, this counter is perfect for a daily use.
Concrete Counter
This material is expensive, heavy and requires a lot of care. It is ideal for people who are looking for a stylish urban look. The colours are beautiful and sinks that are moulded in concrete look spectacular. For those who like living with used and cracked materials. You either love it or you don’t, but it’s interesting.
